RANAAN MEYER BAND

Bio/Meet the Band

The Ranaan Meyer Band:

Ranaan has created a new group in addition to Time for Three that consists of piano, guitar, drums, and bass. This group allows Meyer to focus on his compositional fusion of ALL musical styles while including exciting new arrangements of classical repertoire. This new group is high energy, fun, and in addition to performing is excited about educational outreach. Along with Ranaan, the Ranaan Meyer Band is comprised of Tim Wendel guitar, Matt Scarano drums, and Norma Meyer piano, who is also Ranaan's mother.

Ranaan Meyer's latest arrangement is of Aram Khachaturian's Tocatta. This piece was originally composed for solo piano, but Meyer has arranged this for his full band.  This arrangement is powerful!  It evokes the sound of an entire orchestra playing with a rock band feel.

Highlights from the Ranaan Meyer Band 2009 schedule included a Premiere at Carnegie Hall with the Philadelphia Boys Choir, The  Philadelphia Art Museum Art After Five Series, An Event presented by the Utah Symphony in Park City, Utah, the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church Music Series, a residency at Douglas Anderson School for the Arts in Jacksonville, FL, to name a few.  In 2010 the Ranaan Meyer Band activities include their debut album release, A residency at Classical Jam Band Camp in Bayview, Michigan, a Ranaan Meyer Band program to solo with orchestra, and much more.  For additional information on upcoming concerts check out http://ranaanmeyer.com calendar events and join the Ranaan Meyer fan list.

Ranaan Meyer bio:

Meyer began his musical studies on the piano at age 4, 9 the cello, and at age 11, he took up the double bass. He attended the Manhattan School of Music for three years, after which he transfered to the Curtis Institute of Music, and graduated in 2003. In the past, Ranaan has appeared on a regular basis in the double bass section of orchestras such as the Minnesota Symphony, Baltimore Symphony and The Philadelphia Orchestra. Meyer has found himself increasingly in demand as a collaborative musician and soloist, as well as a composer creating unique new works for his trio Time for Three, the Ranaan Meyer Band, and many other instrumentations. Most recently Mr. Meyer has been arranging and composing material for the Ranaan Meyer Band. Meyer's latest arrangement is of Aram Khachaturian's Tocatta. This piece was originally composed for solo piano, but Meyer has arranged this for his full band.  This arrangement is powerful!  It evokes the sound of an entire orchestra playing with a rock band feel.

Mr. Meyer, also an accomplished jazz musician, has performed with Branford Marsalis, Jane Monheight, Victor Lewis, Jason Moran, Mark O'Connor, Ari Hoenig, Duane Eubanks, Mickey Roker, Rodney Green and many more. Ranaan, at age 19 produced, directed and performed in the very first Washington Township Jazz Festival which was also broadcasted live on Philadelphia's WRTI. Mr. Meyer, an avid teacher, has held in the past adjunct Double Bass Professorships at both Princeton University and the University of Delaware. He has spent several Summers teaching alongside Hal Robinson (Principal Bass of The Philadelphia Orchestra) at the Strings International Music Festival in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and has also lead the Double Bass program. He has also taught at the Intermountain Suzuki Camp in Sandy, Utah and Mark O'Connor's String Camp in San Diego, California.

Through all of Mr. Meyer's teaching experience he found himself compelled to begin camps of his own.  He launched Wabass in Wabash, Indiana: A Double Bass Camp of his own in June 2008.  Wabass teachers include Hal Robinson (Principle Bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra/bass teacher at the Curtis Institute of Music) and Eric Larson (Houston Symphony Double Bassist).  The camp is free of tuition to the 9 elite double bass students that are accepted every year.
